With helicopters overhead, roads blocked, and protesters hauled to jail, Sister Ann Kendrick of the Orlando Diocese went from camera crew to camera crew spreading her message of amnesty. I’ve heard her presentation in which she explains people should be just like the butterflies that are free to cross the border.
Then reality hits.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates that illegal immigration now costs federal and local taxpayers $113 billion a year, of which the cost to Florida is $5.5 billion.
While Florida taxpayers carry this burden, The Network Lobby (a Catholic social justice organization) praises President Obama increasing the funding of their liberal programs. The Network reports that Catholic nonprofit organizations have received $1.5 BILLION over two years. Programs that received funding included:
- $57.89 million Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
- $554 million (2010) to Catholic Charities USA
- $5 million (2009) Dept. of Labor grants to Catholic organizations such as Catholic Charities of Kansas for ex-offender reintegration and other programs.
- $7 million (2011) Catholic Medical Mission Board global health activities
Like a government contractor, Sister Ann’s organization, Hope CommUnity in Apopka, relies on this type of federal funding. Sr. Ann isn’t exactly what you expect when you think of a nun. But, progressive liberals have a way of twisting the meaning of words.
