In a lawsuit against the Health and Human Services and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the Archdiocese of New York cited comments made by Sebelius at a NARAL fundraising event including “we are in a war” with institutions that, like the Catholic Church, believe both abortion and contraception are wrong.
I wonder if the average American Catholic attending Sunday’s Mass realizes that that the U.S. government has declared war on his faith and on his church. Being held hostage in this war are children in Catholic schools that will close, patients being treated by Catholic hospitals that will close, orphans in state care that will not be adopted through Catholic charities, and victims of human sex trafficking that will not receive Catholic counseling.
I understand the desire to not hear politics in a homily, but when the state is attacking the Church, it should not be ignored by the bishops, priests, and deacons. It is sad that this divisive president of ours has made our churches a battleground for his radical agenda. Perhaps he thought Catholics would go along quietly. After all, Sebelius, herself is Catholic along with prominent democrats like Vice-president Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. However, judging from the success of the Fortnight for Freedom campaign and the outpouring of support for Chick-fila, I believe there is a growing resistance to Obama’s agenda that is quietly sweeping through the pews of our Churches.
