Why would Floridians want to subsidize the Ethanol Industry?
That’s my question for Republican Adam Putnam.
Aaron Deslatte of the Orlando Sentinel reports Adam Putnam, the Agriculture Commissioner of Florida, is considering subsidizing the timber and sugar industries’ ethanol endeavors. Through “sales tax exemptions, investment tax credits, and investments in university research”, Florida can get into the ethanol business. That sounds like a whole lot of corporate welfare to me!
WHY would the taxpayers of Florida want their money to be used to produce a product that makes our food more expensive (and in this case, possibly wood products, too), is bad for our automobile engines and has no environmental advantage?
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Ft. Walton), who recently introduced the Florida Renewable Fuel Standard Act Repeal, HB 4013, which repeals the 2008 Florida law requiring gasoline to include ethanol, cites a Cornell University study that finds that “producing ethanol and other biodiesel from corn and other crops is not worth the energy”.
Many tea parties (here here here and here) across the state are encouraging their members to contact their legislators and members of the Energy and Utilities Subcommittee and ask them to support HB 4013. Rep. Scott Plakon, the chairman of this committee, has placed the bill on the agenda for the 2012 session.
Besides contacting the legislators, we need to call Adam Putnam and tell him that Florida needs to STAY OUT SUBSIDIZING the ethanol industry! I am sure sugar and timber lobbyists in Tallahassee are trying to get their hands on our money!
